Chapter 1 – Lift Fault Diagnosis

A clear method for finding a fault without relying on a manufacturer’s manual. Every fault follows the same order: symptom, probable causes, step-by-step checks and safety. Includes original diagrams and a quick checklist.

Written for lift maintenance technicians, electricians starting out in the trade and independent technicians with safety training.

  1. Before you start: who it is for, six-step diagnostic method and recommended tools
  2. General safety for every fault and how the safety chain works
  3. Fault 1 · Stretched overspeed governor rope
  4. Fault 2 · Frequency inverter tripped or burnt out
  5. Fault 3 · Blocked infrared light curtain
  6. Fault 4 · Car door operator
  7. Fault 5 · Landing and car doors out of adjustment
  8. Summary: quick checklist and checklist before returning the lift to service

How the academy works

  • Built on practice

Original content based on the author’s field experience. No copied manufacturer manuals.

  • Valid for any make

It explains principles and diagnostic methods that work on installations from different manufacturers.

  • Safety first

Every chapter marks what must never be skipped: lockout/tagout, inspection mode, rescue and jumpers.

About the author

Ramón Uriepero

Industrial engineer · Lift, industrial electrical and refrigeration technician · Hallwil AG (Switzerland)

More than 30 years of technical work on three continents, over 15 of them on lifts. His work on lifts and electrical installations began long before his engineering studies: from an experienced mentor he learned to take measurements on installations, find faults systematically and spot failures before they happen.

Since then he has worked in refineries, on oil tankers, in hotels and in factories. In Spain he looked after portfolios of more than 120 lifts, with 24/7 on-call duty and passenger rescue. In refrigeration and air conditioning he worked as a self-employed technician and in a fishing fleet, and he was a trainer in industrial instrumentation.

  • Industrial engineering degree, recognised in Spain as “Ingeniero Técnico Industrial”, mechanical specialisation (RD 967/2014)
  • Spanish professional certificate as a lift technician (IMAQ0110)
  • Training in photovoltaics, PLCs, robotics and variable frequency drives
